The national consultations for the establishment of a Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) were launched on 14 August in The Gambia. Our United Nations West Africa Regional Office for Human Rights (OHCHR – WARO) is taking part in it and leading the implementation of the Peace Building Support Office (PBSO) transitional justice project in The Gambia.

The national consultations take place in the form of town hall meetings that are open to the general public and will be held in all regions of the Gambia until 25 August.

They started in Kerewan on Monday 14 August and continued to Janjanbureh on 15 August.

In the upcoming week, the core team of civil servants, civil society, the victims centre and UN officials will visit the regions with the aim to obtain the views and opinions of the Gambian public about the TRRC and to sensitize the general public on the concepts, issues, rationale and objectives of the TRRC. The process brings together representatives from a cross-section of Gambian communities including youth, women and children organizations, civil society, religious communities, the media, and staff of the Ministry of Justice who form the core team for the consultations.

These community hall meetings should contribute to a comprehensive TRRC Bill for the establishment of a Commission that will reflect the aspirations of the people of The Gambia to build a better society, foster social cohesion and encourage national reconciliation.
